Michael Lloyd: Three chalices

Title: Three Chalices
Artist: Michael Lloyd (b. 1950, British)
Location: Carlisle Cathedral (C of E)
Date: 1992, 2002

‘The first chalice was commissioned from Michael Lloyd in memory of a Mr and Mrs Thomson in 1992. It has small gilded triangles dotted over the base which represent the Holy Trinity which reminds us of the Cathedral dedication. The four nail head decoration on the knop reflect some of the detailed stonework in the building. The second chalice is in memory of The Right Revd Cyril Bulley who was Bishop of Carlisle from 1967–1972. It has on it a chased pattern on the base and knop which echo the Cumbrian Fells and the ripples in the Lakes and Solway Coast. The third chalice with matching paten is in memory of The Venerable David Turnbull, Archdeacon of Carlisle from 1993–2001. It has on it a wonderful hand chased detail of olive leaves and berries. The knop has a line which undulates around it’s middle which as well as decoration aids the person to safely hold the chalice whilst offering the sacrament.’ (Carlisle Cathedral Office)

Born in Salisbury in 1950, Michael Lloyd trained at the Birmingham School of Silversmithing followed by the Royal College of Art under Professor Robert Goodden and Professor Gerald Benney. Lloyd’s commissions include works for Lichfield Cathedral, chapel furnishings for St Oswald’s Hospice, and a mace presented by HRH Elizabeth II to the New Scottish Parliament in 1999. His work is present in many private collections and museums across the United Kingdom including Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Royal Scottish Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Lloyd is also a Freeman of the Goldsmiths’ Company.
